So what is Cacao?
Cacao is a fruit, a bean which grows on Theobroma Cacao trees in tropical countries. Once a pod full of cacao beans is picked from the tree, the beans are removed and dried in the sun, creating a natural fermentation process. Later on, they are chopped into little cacao nibs and can be consumed from then on. The nibs are lightly roasted containing all its nutrients and then pressed together, creating blocks of cacao which are later on blessed by a medicine woman from the tribe. This type of cacao, is unprocessed with no other substance added to it and can be used for ceremonial cacao, or by any individual for their morning cacao beverage or however else they want to use it.
Cacao in its purest unprocessed form is a true superfood as it contains over 40 antioxidants, is full of iron, magnesium and micronutrients beneficial to the body. This type of cacao can be bought for consumption mainly in south America and Africa.

In western society, this type of cacao is not sold in “mainstream shops” as the cacao present there is known as chocolate or cocoa.
Chocolate stems from cocoa beans, which are roasted cacao beans which reduce the nutrient benefits of the bean almost completely. The roasted beans are then chopped into nibs which are then added with sugar, milk and other ingredients. This “chocolate” mixture is then cooled and turned into the various different chocolate products sold in western society. These forms of chocolate, do not hold any of the beneficial nutritional properties from the cacao bean, but purely satisfy the taste receptors and are actually very damaging to the human body.
There are of course delicious mixtures which stem from the pure cacao bean guarding its nutritional and healing properties which can be bought from authentic independent cacao producers. They use the pure cacao bulks and transform them into high quality cacao products.

How did Cacao turn into Chocolate?
In 1828 the cocoa press was invented where cocoa butter was extracted from roasted beans creating cocoa powder. This powder was then mixed with different liquids and ingredients creating chocolate bars. By 1847 the first chocolate bar was created and by 1875 a certain Swiss chocolate brand mixed this powder with milk creating milk chocolate. From then on one different type of chocolate brand after the other was created. What started of as a nice idea, turned into products which have absolutely nothing to do with the initial cocoa bean leaving behind all of its healing properties and beneficial nutrients.
Since 2024 there was a cacao crisis which global shortage of cacao which increased its price tremendously or making it completely unavailable for some time. There were shortages as the harvest of cacao beans saw major issues, from infectious soils, to bad harvests. This however strongly impacted the distributors who sell authentic cacao beans and left the modern chocolate industry less unimpacted. I let you imagine why. Thankfully since 2025 the cocoa crisis is reducing and thankfully there are still independent farmers which sell sacred cacao beans.

How do Cacao ceremonies work?
Cacao ceremonies are a very ancient ritual allowing you to open your heart, essentially feel more love, create a deeper connection to yourself, the earth and every living being on it. It strengthens your overall feeling of love and connection to earth.
In authentic cacao ceremonies, sacred cacao is chosen, mixed with near to boiling water, adding some extra ingredients of choice such as Himalayan salt, rose petals, vanilla, cinnamon, plant-based milk, it varies, and most importantly an intention is set in the initial mix. Usually this will be a general intention focusing on collective abundance, love, joy, something that is beneficial to everyone. Later on, when the cups of cacao are distributed to the people taking part in the ceremony, each person holds the cup in their hands and places their own intention into the cup. Once the cacao is distributed a prayer is said to open the circle of the ceremony which includes gratitude to the earth, the cacao itself and the environment it was made in. The cacao is then smelt, placed to the heart, and consumed very gently and slowly with awareness in sips. This creates a moment of connection to the cacao and appreciation to the earth, where it came from. It also practices the act of being extremely conscious and aware of what you are consuming and intensifies the connection to yourself and every living thing around you.
Cacao has the power to truly open your heart. What this means is that the cells around your chest area, including your heart are more receptive to allow higher frequencies to enter them. Speaking energetically, this allows your cells to vibrate at a higher frequency thus allows you to experience more sensations of love.

Cacao beans are an incredible source provided to us by the earth which can truly enhance your life. Some use it for ceremonial purposes in groups, some for their own sacred morning beverage ritual, others switch from coffee to cacao and some simply enjoy the nibs throughout the day. Either way it is to be consumed with consciousness and can truly uplift your life. In the end everything is about the intention it has behind it and how we consume it. Therefore, when purchasing pure cacao beans, do some research about the farm you are buying it from and you will find the authentic ones.
We are generation change!
